Seychelles is a popular destination for travellers from all over the world because of its natural beauty and heavenly beaches. To facilitate entry for visitors, the Seychelles government has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for certain countries. But what about Seychellois residents and nationals? Do they also need an ETA to enter this magnificent archipelago?
What is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a document which allows a foreign national to travel to a country, in this case the Seychelles, and to apply for entry to the immigration authorities on arrival. This authorisation is not a visa, but rather a pre-authorisation to enter the country. The final decision to admit a traveller to Seychelles always rests with the relevant immigration authorities.
Since August 2019, international visitors have been able to apply for an ETA before arriving in Seychelles, facilitating entry without the need for a traditional visa. This system has been put in place to help promote tourism and attract more travellers to the country.
How does the ETA application work?
To apply for an ETA, it is necessary to fill in an online form with personal and passport details. Once this has been completed, visitors must provide a recent digital photo of themselves. Finally, travellers must make the payment required for their application. The time taken to obtain authorisation varies from case to case, but generally speaking, it takes an average of 3 working days to receive a response.
Seychelles residents: Do I need an ETA to enter Seychelles?
The good news for Seychellois residents and nationals is that they can enter Seychelles without first obtaining an ETA. The Seychelles authorities consider that permanent residents do not need this document to return to the country.
However, certain documents must be presented when entering the country:
- A passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry
- A copy of your residence permit (carte de résident)
- A return or onward ticket to another destination
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover the cost of the stay for the planned duration
- Confirmed accommodation in the Seychelles for the duration of your stay
An online procedure is still necessary before arrival.. The procedure is the same as for the ETA. However, the document is different. It is called Boarding form. It is generally free if you are travelling with a Seychelles travel document. All you have to do is upload a copy of your travel document to the online platform and fill in the details of your arrival and outward flight.
Travellers requiring an ETA to enter Seychelles
Although Seychellois residents and nationals do not need an ETA to enter Seychelles, there are several categories of people who must obtain one:
1. Visa-exempt visitors
Many countries are visa-free, allowing their nationals to enter Seychelles without having to apply for a visa first. However, these visa-exempt travellers must still apply for an ETA before arriving in the country.
2. Holders of ordinary visas
Some travellers may be required to obtain an ordinary visa to enter Seychelles. These people will also need to apply for an ETA in addition to their visa application.
3. Commercial and business travellers
Persons travelling to Seychelles on business, regardless of nationality, are required to obtain an ETA prior to departure.
4. Visitors in transit
Finally, travellers transiting through Seychelles for less than 24 hours and simply planning to change planes without leaving the airport's international zone will also need to apply for an ETA.
